The Foreign Founder's Guide to Business Cards in Japan
Business cards still matter in Japan. Here's what foreign founders should know — paper, size, exchange etiquette, and pitfalls to avoid.
Business cards are still the currency of professional introductions in Japan. If you're new here and plan to do business, a well-made card pays for itself many times over.
Size matters
Standard Japanese business cards are 91 × 55 mm — slightly different from European or American sizes. Japanese counterparts carry meishi-holders sized for this format.
Both sides, both languages
Convention is English on one side, Japanese on the other. Include your phonetic name in katakana beneath your Japanese name — it signals respect and helps pronunciation.
Paper choice
Avoid glossy laminates — they read as cheap in a Japanese context. Aim for uncoated or soft-touch in 300–350 gsm. A card that feels substantial communicates care.
Exchange etiquette
Hand cards with two hands, text facing the recipient. Receive the same way. Never write on a card in front of the person who gave it to you.
We print bilingual business cards weekly for foreign founders. Send us your logo and contact details on WhatsApp — we'll propose a layout within a day.
